Free Public Train Rides

OCME operates trains for the public on the third weekend of every month (weather permitting).

This is the ONLY time that public train rides are given. All other weekend dates are reserved for birthday parties and railroad maintenance.

*For Children to ride the trains, they must be able to walk
and be at least 31″ tall. No babies in baby carriers. All riders must be seated and facing forward for the duration of the ride.

Public ride days are the highlight for the club. They are conducted on the third full Saturday and Sunday of each month from 10:00 am until 3:30 pm. In 2023 we gave rides to over 40,000 people and have given more than 550,000 free rides since 2002.

Because of our popularity, and the place we’ve carved out for ourselves in more than 30 years of operating a miniature railroad, long lines can sometimes form on these free operation days. Rest assured that all our volunteers are working to get you on the train as soon as possible.

The club has a variety of engines and riding cars. Trains on public ride days are made up of 4 to 7 bench cars that seat 4 to 6 adults and children per car.

Rides are free; however, donations are strongly encouraged. The trains only run with your generous support.

Riders depart from Goathill Junction Station for a ride around the layout during one of our public days

A typical trip takes 12-15 minutes and covers two park loops or approximately 1.25 miles. Bridges and terrain variations are just part of the scenery, as is the back end of the Costa Mesa Golf Course, a gorgeous view of the surrounding mountains, and the lower part of the City of Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach. Plus, there is wildlife all around, especially for bird lovers.

Your furry companions are welcome to join you inside the park- provided they are on a leash and abiding by all City of Costa Mesa ordinances for all city parks- but aren’t allowed on our trains.

All trains depart from the Goathill Junction Railroad Train Station, with the first train leaving at 10 AM and the last train departing just before 3:30 PM. We hope to see you there!

It is not easy to find a venue in Orange County that is more fun than the free train rides from OCME members than a visit to Goathill Junction. I will rate this family entertainment as 5 stars.
